Step 1: Gather Required Documents:
Step 2: Fill Out Form DS-11:
Complete Form DS-11, the U.S. Passport Application. You can do this online and print the form or obtain a copy at a local passport acceptance facility. To apply online, click here.
Step 3: Visit a Passport Acceptance Facility:
Take your completed Form DS-11, proof of U.S. citizenship, government-issued photo ID, passport photos, and payment for fees to a passport acceptance facility. Acceptance facilities include post offices, clerk of court offices, public libraries, and some government offices. Some facilities require an appointment, so call ahead.
Step 4: Pay the Applicable Fees:
The fees for a U.S. passport vary depending on the type of passport and processing speed. The typical fees include an application fee and an execution fee. You can find the current fee schedule on the U.S. Department of State's website.
Step 5: Provide Parental Consent for Minors:
For applicants under 16 years old, both parents or guardians must provide consent. For applicants aged 16-17, only one parent or guardian's consent is required. Both parents or guardians should appear in person with the minor at the acceptance facility or provide notarized consent if one parent cannot be present.
Step 6: Submit Your Application:
Present your documents and application to the acceptance agent. They will review your paperwork, administer an oath, and witness your signature. After this, the agent will seal your documents in an envelope, which you should not open.
Step 7: Choose Standard or Expedited Processing:
You can select standard processing, which takes about 4-6 weeks for routine service, or expedited processing, which takes about 2-3 weeks for an additional fee. If you need your passport urgently (within 72 hours) due to a life-or-death emergency, you can make an appointment at a regional passport agency.
Step 8: Receive Your Passport:
Your new passport will be mailed to you at the address you provided on your application. Keep track of its delivery status using the tracking number provided. Once you receive your passport, make a photocopy of it to keep in a separate location for backup.
Remember to apply for your passport well in advance of your intended travel to avoid any last-minute delays or complications. Always keep your passport in a secure place, as it is an essential travel document.
